River diversion ceremony for the Bui Hydroelectric Dam Project

On 24th August 2007, His Excellency, President John Agyekum Kufuor, the President of the Republic of Ghana, cut the sod for the commencement of the Bui Hydroelectric Power Project. The Project will add 400 Megawatts of electrical power to the existing capacity of the country after completion.

 

The project has gone far and has reached its first milestone, which is the diversion of the Black Volta River at the Dam Site, to pave way for the construction of the main dam and its appurtenant structures such as the Spill Way, Power Intake and Power House. The River Diversion stage is seen as the end of Phase One of the Project, which is the preparatory stage and also the beginning of Phase Two, which is the actual Dam Construction. The River Diversion Ceremony, which took place on 2nd December 2008 at the Dam Site at 10.30am, was graced by His Excellency the President. Also, Senior Management Members of Sinohydro Corporation of China, the Contractors, arrived in the country for the Ceremony.
